The pressure is on England, and coach Eddie Jones, to satisfy the Twickenham crowd and the hungry media. But there is more to it than that.

There is no doubt that England are a rising force, but if you look closely at the past 11 months they haven't turned into an irresistible one in the way that four wins over the Wallabies in 2016 suggested they might.

After smashing the Wallabies at Twickenham last December they narrowly beat France (home) and Wales (away) by a total of eight points in the Six Nations, they were badly caught out by Italy's 'no ruck' tactic at Twickenham and they lost to Ireland in Dublin.

Only the thumping 61-21 win against Scotland stands out among those results and there was a successful tour of Argentina in which England, without their British and Irish Lions, won both Tests. Then came last weekend's stop-start victory against Argentina. No wonder Jones turned to profanities last week. Conceding the last try to a poor Argentine side was not part of his plan.

Yet we need to put a cap on expectations. Jones has built a different England to the one that wilted under pressure at the Rugby World Cup. And between that debacle and Saturday's contest a lot of their players have experienced a British and Irish Lions tour.

In their pre-match comments Michael Cheika and Stephen Larkham have certainly been bowling a good length but the danger is that England might just be mentally tough enough to avoid rash strokes.

If there is a face to the new type of England player it is openside Sam Underhill. He is just 21 years old but he is extremely well conditioned, strong in the tackle and influential over the ball. In fact, athleticism is a hallmark of this England side. With Anthony Watson at fullback and Jonathan Joseph at outside-centre I cannot recall any England side that has so much pace.

They were only moderate against Argentina last week. Partly, it was the crowd. At times Twickenham generates about as much frisson as a financial services conference. But my concern for the Wallabies is that England's performance reflected the opposition. With due respect to Argentina the English will be far more on edge this week. They have got to a stage where they want to be tested.

The Wallabies have the ability to do that yet my mind still drifts to absent friends - Israel Folau, Jack Dempsey and Lukhan Tui.

I'm also an opponent of the Samu Kerevi selection at No.12 but oddly can see that it makes more sense this week than last.

First, Kerevi will be more familiar with the role and his teammates more familiar with him. I expect him to run as many decoys as crash balls this week. Second, George Ford is an easier target than Dan Biggar.

However, the area where the Wallabies might really be tested is impact off the bench. There, England have placed hooker Jamie George and second-rower Maro Itoje, soon to be announced as World Player of the Year unless Owen Farrell grabs it.

George and Itoje are dynamic as a pair as well as individuals and will turn the screws at set piece as well as offer energy around the park. Danny Care and Semesa Rokoduguni also offer England the opportunity to up the tempo.

It has been a successful year for England but probably not a remarkable one. Perhaps the critics are right when they say they need to stop mentioning the All Blacks in every second sentence. But I am wary of them.

Gradually, as a team increases its numbers of world class players, a big performance grows more likely. And England are still heading in that direction.
