The ceremony hosted by Gunnedah Shire Council and Hines Constructions marks the first step in the 12 month long, $11.4 million project upgrade.
Gunnedah Shire Council Mayor, Jamie Chaffey said the renewal project was the biggest in council history.
“Financially this is the largest infrastructure project ever been under taken by our council,” Cr Chaffey said.
“It will result in the establishment of a new eight lane 50 meter pool, a kid’s wet play area which will be fantastic for our youth and a new main pavilion.
“We will keep the memorial as it currently is.”
Cr Chaffey said the indoor heated pool would be open for the majority of construction.
“The heated pool will only close for an eight to 10 week period in mid 2018,” he said.
Fellow councilor Owen Hasler said the project working group are looking forward to progressing with the project.
“I’m sure all members of the memorial pool working group look forward to the progression of this renewal project,” Cr Hasler said.
Construction of the new facility is expected to be complete ahead of next summer.
