McLaughlin slashed almost 0.8 seconds from Jamie Whincup’s two-year-old practice lap record and stamped his authority ahead of this afternoon's qualifying with an impressive 2:04.1470 on the clock.
2014 Bathurst 1000 winner, Chaz Mostert, was the first to break Whincup's record and finished with the second quickest lap time of the session, while 2011 Bathurst 1000 winner Nick Percat was third quickest.
McLaughlin has started from the front row of the grid the last two years in a row. This afternoon's qualifying will decide which drivers take part in tomorrow's Top 10 Shootuout.
