Best Western general manager Robert Page said numbers over the October long weekend could be unpredictable, but this year his hotel is almost fully booked out.
“It’s a bit surprising, generally speaking the October long weekend can tend to be a bit quieter because it’s in the school holidays,” Mr Page said. “But it’s been decently busy throughout so far.”
The huge influx of visitors has left Mr Page scratching his head.
“I was on the Destination NSW website last night looking for any specific events,” he said.
“Whatever is going on, it's good for the whole town. I hope to see a lot more weekends like this.”
Courthouse Hotel owner Fraser Haughton said the pub’s Friday and Saturday night accommodation was booked out.
“A few are here for rodeo-related stuff this weekend,” he said.
Powerhouse Hotel general manager Ben Davies said it was looking like a “bumper weekend”, with his hotel almost full. And, with the passing trade, he expects it to be booked out.
“We’re seeing a lot of passing trade, especially [on Thursday],” Mr Davies said.
“People taking advantage of the long weekend and are passing through Tamworth as they travel to or from Queensland.
“All round it's looking like a cracking weekend. Historically, the October long weekend can be a bit hit and miss, but this year is a real bonanza.”
Many of Mr Davies’ customers are in town for the Jehovah’s Witnesses conference – the city is playing host to about 4000 Jehovah’s Witnesses over the next two weeks.
Hundreds of dog lovers and their furry companions are camping out at AELEC over the long weekend for the Agility Dog Association of Australia’s national grand prix.
AELEC manager Mike Rowland said because it was difficult to find dog-friendly hotels, most competitors stay on site in the same way those involved in equine competitions did.
Tamworth is also hosting the some of the region’s best young cricketers and their families.
The Central North Cricket Invitational Carnival will run over the long weekend, with 12 teams representing Northern Inland, Hunter Valley, Mid North Coast and Scots College.
