Rugby Union: Conrad Starr wins Pirates best and fairest

Six days after leading them to back to back premierships Conrad Starr was recognised as Pirates’ best and fairest.

The number eight had another stellar year, and was duly acknowledged for it when the club held its presentation at West Leagues Club on Friday night.

As well as the Pat McCarthy Memorial Shield as the first grade best and fairest, the skipper was also awarded the prestigious Phar Lap award and was the club’s highest point scorer with 135 points from 27 tries. 

Backrow partner Doug Biffin won the Tamex Perpetual Shield as the first grade players’ player while half-back James Trappel was adjudged the best back and hooker Tim Collins the best forward.

Collins also received the Buccaneers award while Joe Tufrey picked up the Junior Phar Lap award, Morgan Pennefather was the Junior Club Person of the Year, Mia O’Sullivan the representative player of the year and Ali Faulkner the Club Lady of the Year. The club also awarded life membership to Pat Saunders and Pip McCann.

Under 19s: Best and Fairest (Bevan Pearse Memorial Shield) – Angus White, Players’ Player (Tamex Transport Perpetual Shield) – Tom Maloney, Best Forward – Will Sorenson, Best Back – Jackson Sharpe.

Under 17s: Best and Fairest (Pirates Rugby Club Shield) – Tom Dietrich, Players’ Player (Tamex Transport Perpetual Shield) – Jye Taggart, Best Forward – Doughall O’Reilly, Best Back – Darcy Allen.
