The self-proclaimed “ordinary player” coached the NSWCCC under 16s team – alongside Nathan Short and Justin McCarney – to New South Wales Schools Rugby Under 16 Championship glory on June 25.
However, it was no easy feat.
Coming up against the CHS team in the final, CCC trailed by two points going into the final moments of the game before Lathan Hutchinson-Walters sent home a winning penalty goal.
“It was a long range shot and he just nailed it to win it by one point [15-16],” Williams said.
“I felt sorry for the CHS side, they’d done the same drills and put in the work.
“But it was just huge [for us], it was the first time CCC had won the tournament at this level.”
What made the win even more pleasing was how the side truly represented the whole CCC system with players from roughly 20 different schools in the team.
“It’s wonderful to get these young men to come together, gel so well and play a nearly perfect game of football – of running rugby,” Williams said.
“If they had the ball, they would run it from their own line. That’s how confident they were, there was a lot of strong runners.”
CCC progressed following to strong performances from the tenacious side.
CCC first beat CAS 17-5 before overcoming ISA 39-22 to make the final.
