In February, NSW Water Minister Niall Blair told The Leader the “Dungowan Dam study is expected to be completed in 2018”.
However, The Leader can reveal the study is now due to be completed in August this year.
The $850,000 study is looking into if and how the dam can be expanded from 6.3 gigalitres, up to around 44 gigalitres.
New England MP Barnaby Joyce promised $75m for the dam’s upgrade once the study was completed.
Meanwhile, Tamworth Regional Council is also investigating the future of another dam, at Barraba.
With the pipeline from Split Rock Dam to Barraba, there is no need to maintain the Connors Creek Dam as an emergency water supply for the town. At Tuesday night’s meeting, councillors will consider a report which recommends providing $100,000 to continue investigating its long-term future.
