Mr Hickson created the HMAS Recyclable submarine using items such as a Toyota petrol tank, the top of a watering can, a model boat from Balmain, and treasured childhood items including a wind-up duck toy, a ruler that belonged to his father, a small pail with images of a child on the beach, a transistor wireless, and an old photo frame. Another special feature is a lamp from a bread cart, which belonged to the father of a childhood friend.
The HMAS Recyclable was one of around 30 entries from Gunnedah, Liverpool Plains and Tamworth shires. The competition theme was “technologic”.
Gunnedah resident Elizabeth Emmerson took out the top prize with her portrait, Lady Maria. The large work saw the artist use many items, including an old book, remote controls, circuit boards, garbage bags, cupcake cases, a hair barrette, tea bags and a toy car.
Council’s arts and cultural officer, Lauren Mackley said she was thankful to everyone who participated and attended the opening.
“I was very impressed [by the art works],” she said.
“I was so happy so many people contributed.”
Council’s Andrew Johns said the creativity illustrated was wonderful.
“Waste these days is looked at as a resource, not just waste,” he said.
“I’m blown away by the variety and the thought process that’s gone into these [works].”
