For the second meeting in a row this season the two sides shared the points after Adam Straub’s stick denied Kiwis what would have been a match-winning goal in the final seconds of their Tamworth men’s first grade clash.
After clawing their way back from a two-goal deficit, Kiwis had a shot with around 10 seconds to go to snatch the win, but Straub saved it on the line to leave the scores locked at 4-all.
Souths coach Greg Scott was disappointed that they let a two-goal lead slip but happy with their progress.
“It was a step in the right direction,” he said.
“There was a bit more structure for periods.”
“We’ve just got to get better at shutting games out and controlling games.”
It was a bit “helter skelter” at times, he said.
“We let in a soft goal, which gave them a sniff,” Scott said.
The defence generally though was good.
“Obviously having Jeremy (Blakely) back (from state U18s duties) made a huge difference,” he said.
As Straub’s late save was a testament to, Scott noted there was a bit more desperation. Luke Albertson also saved one on the line earlier in the game.
In the other game Workies beat Tudor Wests 5-2.
Stepping up to a striking role in the absence of Isaac Farmilo, who was along with Ehren Hazell away at state U21s trials, Jack Cruickshank netted a double.
“The first half wasn’t really good. They actually scored first,” Workies coach Andrew Farmilo said.
“With two minutes to go we scored two goals to go 2-1 up.”
“They pressed really well and put us under pressure and didn’t give us any time on the ball.”
They went to 3-1 within the first five minutes of the second half and while Tudors got back to 3-2, Workies were never headed.
The midfield provided a lot of drive with Calvin Farmilo, Addison Coutman and Toby Whitten “full of running”.
