Ian and Merilyn Binney bought their first Holden from Kensells in 1989.
Ever since, the couple has bought Holden cars only.
On Wednesday, the duo, who both turn 70 this year, bought their milestone 16th Holden from Kensells – the last Calais to be produced in Australia to come to Tamworth.
It follows Holden announcing an October deadline to end car production in Australia, part of an industry shutdown that will also see Ford and Toyota stop manufacturing cars in this country.
But the decision isn’t likely to curtail the Binney’s longstanding love of their trusty cars.
“My father had the first Holden to be bought in Victoria,” Mrs Binney said.
“I guess it runs in the family.
“Ian worked in real estate so we had to have reliable cars.
“They’re so very well made. We’ve just always liked them.”
So are they the city’s biggest Holden fans?
“Yes, probably,” Mrs Binney chuckled.
