it was nice to sit and watch a quiet relaxing game of fun Tuesday night basketball, or that’s how it was meant to happen!
The Curra Pub Team sponsored by, surprisingly, the Hotel in Currabubula were one of the teams in the 6pm game of the women’s competition. Their competitors were the High Hopes team wearing their bright orange uniforms with Harriet Kate Designs on the front. Not being familiar with the name I had to ask and it is a label of children’s clothing and accessories available at the Lemon House. Curiosity satisfied!
Both teams took to the floor and the battle was on to see who would make the court their own. They came out swinging with No 11, Nicole Luckey from Curra, and No 18, Kira-Lee Shaw from High Hopes, putting two points each on the board one after the other.
A breakaway by No 15 Donna Goman in orange gave her a shot which teased us by circling the hoop before dropping through. Brianna Flynn in the black and white Curra uniform quickly retaliated with her own two.
There were some lovely displays of teamwork by both sides. This was showcased beautifully by No 11 Luckey when she faked a charge handing off to No 13 Kate Sutherland who gave the Pub another two points.
The score evened up at 12-12 with another basket by Luckey, but the ink was barely dry before No 4 Kristen Ridgeway scored another 2-pointer to put High Hopes back in front. Sixteen all with less than three minutes on the board and a three pointer to No 18 Shaw was a source of delight to her team-mates.
Currabubula didn’t let that slide and came back with two 2-point shots which gave us the half time score of 20-19.
The second half started well for both teams and Currabubula valiantly clung on to their lead against High Hopes until 10 minutes into the half. This was the turning point for the orange team as their shots just kept finding their marks and High Hopes finished with 41 points to Curra’s 29 points.
Tuesday nights are a different dynamic than we see with the junior games with the role reversal of children cheering their parents.
Tuesdays are a little quieter but there is still the undercurrent of excitement that comes in a competitive atmosphere. The heat rubs may smell stronger on Tuesday nights with the wide range of ages that play, but the passion for the game is as strong.
This weekend sees the first away games for the Junior Rep teams. The three Under 12 teams will be heading to Newcastle to compete while the other five teams in Division 1 will wind their way to Port Macquarie.
