After suffering a heavy first up defeat to Riverina in their first of two Twenty20s for the day, the Ryan Whitton-managed side handed out the same treatment to Western to end the opening day on a winning note.
It had started horribly, slumping to 4-6 early against Riverina.
They never recovered from that and were scuppered for just 70.
Coming in at six, Oxley High’s Lara Graham top-scored with 20 while Macintyre High’s Chloe Johnson made 19 at eight.
There wasn’t much else outside of them though.
“The pitch was a bit tacky and there was some good bowling by them,” Whitton said.
Riverina in reply got the runs two wickets down with Sydney Thunder regional rookie Rachel Trenaman doing the bulk of the damage.
The player of the carnival the last two years, Trenaman finished up unbeaten on 71 as Riverina batted through their 20 overs.
Graham and Inverell High’s Claire Lennon shared the two wickets North West did pick up.
Fielding first in their second game, North West’s bowlers kept a tight line and stifled the Western batsmen, restricting them to 7-54 from their 20 overs.
Graham was again among the wickets with 2-11 while school-mate Deni Baker claimed 3-8 with her left-arm off-spin.
North West then had little trouble chasing the runs.
“We got the runs in 12 overs two wickets down,” Whitton said.
They batted on to finish up 7-106 with Graham, elevated up to four, remaining unconquered on 33.
Gunnedah High’s Zoe Fleming also made 24 and put on 32 with Graham for the third wicket to see North West over the line.
“It was much improved on the morning, the bowling especially,” Whitton said,
“In the morning we bowled 20 wides.
“We only bowled three wides in the second game.
“It was a good fielding performance as well.”
They’ve got another two Twenty20s on Tuesday against Sydney East and Hunter.
It is a fairly young side with a couple of the girls only in Year 7.
