The 23-year-old was driving towards Gunnedah on the Kamilaroi Highway shortly after 2pm Tuesday when an unsecured piece of timber board fell from the truck he was travelling behind.
The timber bounced on the road before hitting his windscreen.
The young driver said he had just seconds to move.
“I saw it bounce and literally had to duck so it didn't hit my head,” he said.
The driver was unharmed in the incident and the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Police said the driver of the heavy vehicle failed to stop and has not yet been identified.
