Local grandmother Judy Lobsey couldn’t believe her eyes when the youngest of her four sons delivered the news that he was going to have the first girl, Isabella Rose, born from a Lobsey father in this line for 72 years.
Ross and Judy Lobsey had four boys, then their eldest, Matt, had four boys, followed by Sam having another boy two years ago, so it was all but written in the stars that Tom would also have a boy with his wife Katie, but it wasn’t to be.
Last year the couple returned to Tamworth from their home in Sydney with a special ‘gender cake’ to announce the pregnancy and sex to the Lobsey household.
“I was over the moon with excitement and couldn’t wait to tell everyone I was going to have a girl,” Tom said.
“We had a cake with pink lollies inside and when mum cut it and the pink lollies fell out she hit the roof with excitement.”
Meanwhile local dry cleaner Ross was also rubbing his eyes, in the same state of disbelief as his son was a few weeks earlier.
“Dad just looked at the lollies and said ‘that’s a weird coloured blue,” Tom said.
“I was the same – In no way did I ever think that I would have a girl after all the boys in the family – It just never crossed my mind.”
The last girls born from a Lobsey father were Ross’s sisters, Evelyn and Sue, who both had two boys and a girl each, so on Ross’s side of the family Isabella Rose was the first girl from ten babies, and just the third girl in thirteen children in the extended family.
“She certainly is a minority,” Ross said.
“The first girl in three generations in my line.”
While Tom can’t quite put his finger on how it happened he does have a few theories, although his major concern is getting Isabella Rose up to speed and match fit for the annual Rawson Ave Christmas cricket tournament.
“I don’t think anyone will mess with her at school with the boys around,” Tom said.
“Although she better get good at cricket, hockey and football if she wants to keep up at Christmas, she might be in some trouble there.”
“She is amazing, the heat isn’t helping her sleep at the moment, but she is just amazing.”
