Our Animals is the first joint exhibition by artistic siblings Anna and Lucy Culliton who share a love for wildlife and pets.
Lucy has contributed paintings to the show, which are complemented by Anna’s ceramic works.
“We’ve been making work forever and it’s our first time we’ve shown together,” Lucy said.
The exhibition is also a taste of the Popular Pet Show currently showing at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, where the sisters also have their works on display.
For Bibbenluke resident Lucy, it’s a homecoming of sorts.
“My very first show when I left art school was Guitar-Shaped World in Tamworth Regional Gallery,” she said.
The paintings mainly illustrate domestic animals, while Anna’s ceramics look at Australia’s relationship with native wildlife.
“It’s stranger for me to think that people don’t have a connection with animals,” she said.
The exhibition also comes with a message.
“There’s a little bit of a political edge in there because it’s obviously illegal to have domesticated [native animals],” Anna said.
Anna said she wanted visitors to go away from the exhibit more observant and with more respect for the environment.
Our Animals will be on display until February 18.
