While frequently seen by some gardeners as insignificant, the humble geraniums and pelargoniums are lovely in their own way, with a large variety of colours that also survive well under most conditions.

There are multiple varieties of mix parentage that have been cultivated over a long period of time. Both in England and Europe, where they are prized as potplants, they can be seen in hanging baskets and window boxes displaying a delightful profusion of colour.
In Australia, they are hardy outdoor plants thriving in dry, sunny positions, often making a brilliant show hanging down over a wall.
Best results are obtained from striking cuttings, although they can also be grown from seed.
Pelargoniums fall into definite classes e.g. regal and show hybrids, ivy-leaved climbers, zonal geraniums, and fragrant leaves.
Regal and show hybrids varieties are large with many coloured classes. These plants flower for several months, usually during November and December. If growing in pots, they should be pruned in February.
Ivy-leaved pelargoniums are varieties of the South African Pelargonium peltatum available in many colours.
There are several drawbacks with these plants. Some only last for two to three years. In Tamworth, heavy frosts can affect some badly. If possible plant in a sheltered position.
If you are away over Christmas, a good idea with indoor plants is to place them in the laundry or bath tub, fill with about 5-8mm water.
Tip: In December, cuttings can be taken from coleus, azalea, daphne, and any indoor plants. hydrangea blooms can be affected by severe heat so, if in pots, move to a shady area. To conserve dampness, mulch the gardens during the hotter weather.
Seedlings can be planted for cucumber, pumpkin, zucchini, lettuce, silverbeet, beetroot and sweet corn. Sow carrot, peas and bean seeds.
Poinsettia is a popular indoor plant used to decorate dining tables during the festive season.
To all my readers, a happy, holy and safe Christmas celebration and a healthy New Year.
