At the Tamworth Regional Sports Awards on Friday night, the long-time cricket and rugby union administrator, coach, umpire and scorer was awarded the Cara Hickson Memorial Award for special achievement in sport.
“I was pretty shocked and honoured,” Hood said.
A self-professed sports lover, he hasn’t let the confines of a wheelchair hinder his involvement and can be most weekends over the summer found down at the cricket fields and in winter supporting, or scoring for his beloved Tamworth Magpies.
“I’ve been involved in cricket in some capacity since 1995,” he said.
Initially starting out as scorer for the City United fourth grade team he graduated to umpiring in 2001 and got into coaching about 2010. He has also in recent seasons organised and convened the annual Tamworth U14s carnival.
On the rugby front he has been the Magpies registrar for about the last seven years, and has also managed the clubs colts sides.
Hockey star Ehren Hazell was the big winner on the night. He was named the Sports Star of the Year after also taking out the Young Sports Star of the Year. Swimmer Mikaela Short was adjudged the Junior Sports Star of the Year and Isaac Farmilo the Senior Sports Star of the Year.
