It’s a trend Tamworth mayor Col Murray hopes will continue, as he calls for more marquee events to be secured on the local sporting calendar.
Saturday’s NRC decider between Perth Spirit and Country Eagles put Tamworth on the map as the game held at the recently-renovated Scully Park was televised nationally.
Cr Murray said holding big-name sporting events in Tamworth that gauged national coverage was a welcome shot in the arm for the local economy.
“Sports tourism is bringing in dollars, it represents big dollars to our economy,” Cr Murray said.
“Our economy is built around that, you only need to look at the abundance of hotels. We’ve seen some exceptional new development in the hospitality industry and with upgrades to Scully Park, it’s a fabulous asset to the community.”
