Lively Linseed Products is a family-owned Australian company based near Mullaley NSW. Linseed grown on our farm is manufactured into a range of nutritional supplements and biscuits.
Because the Lively Linseed is a true paddock-to-plate story, customers can taste the farm freshness of our products, which is why I think we have taken out awards at both the Sydney and Hobart Fine Food Shows.
Why did you get into this line of work?
I was looking at the ingredients in a loaf of bread; farmers produce 99 per cent of the ingredients and receive less than 0.02 per cent of the sale price of that loaf of bread.
I thought we needed to change how we did things and started looking at value-adding some of our farm produce.
What do you find most and least satisfying about it?
Most satisfying: the cards, letters, emails and phone calls from customers who take the time to let us know how much they like our products. It’s quite amazing.
Least satisfying: it’s a lot of work when you grow, manufacture and distribute a product - you have to be very passionate about what you do.
What do you think is the biggest challenge and opportunity in your industry?
Infrastructure: to value-add a farm product on a large scale you need expensive infrastructure. Also freight, both domestic and international: we need international inland airports to be able to compete on the world stage.
What are you most proud of in your work?
Being able to help people who have health conditions that impact on their quality of life.
Linseed has some amazing health benefits, but it’s people with digestive issues we hear from the most, also people who have used our products for weight loss.
Who do you most admire?
Mmm, probably my father, Trevor Power. He passed away at 50 but achieved a lot in that time. He was intelligent and hardworking but he had vision; he was a very successful man and very generous with his knowledge.
What is your favourite time of the day?
I’m an early riser, so probably a morning run with the dogs just before the sun is up.
What is your favourite invention?
Cochlear ear, by far - I have one!
What do you love to do in your spare time?
Study Mandarin and try to reserve Sundays for the family.
The final word:
Dream big.
