Officers say there have been unconfirmed sightings of Steven Barber, 39, who was last seen in a room at minimum security centre in Glenn Innes about 5.30pm on Monday, September 19.
About 1.05am the next day, correctional officers noticed the window of his room was smashed and he was missing.
Barber’s disappearance was reported to police who have since been searching the area.
On Monday, police received unconfirmed reports a man fitting the description of Barber was seen about 20km north of Glen Innes on the New England Highway.
The unshaven man was riding a khaki-green Polaris brand side-by-side ATV and was last seen wearing a green/brown coloured camouflage jacket and long dark pants.
A co-ordinated search for Barber has resumed this morning involving New England police assisted by the dog squad.
Barber is described as being of Caucasian appearance, around 180cm to 185cm tall, about 80kg in weight, with a medium build, and short brown hair. He has tattoos of boxing gloves on his back, a tattoo of a snake on his left forearm and was last seen wearing a green prison uniform.
