I am intrigued by the political obsession with banning greyhound racing in NSW.
The cynic in me asks whether it has something to do with the elections coming up and some bizarre attempt to raise the profile of state politics when the federal debacle is holding centre stage.
Most greyhound owners adore their animals.
It is a sport requiring disciplined exercise, care for the health of their animals without the outlay of the “Sport of Kings”.
The rewards are modest, other than the love of the sport and animals.
Greyhound racing has had its corrupt and cruel episodes, but it does appear to be trying to combat the criminal or cruel elements.
Why not increase the fines for cruelty to animals to a significant amount?
Have owners register all their dogs, and if they are euthanised, it must be done by a vet and reported to the registering body.
I feel greyhounds are a far more acceptable animal sport than pig dogging.
We have constant mauling incidents involving pig dog and hunting dog breeds.
Our politicians do little about it.
These animals are encouraged to be violent, trained to maul other animals and are an integral part of a human blood sport.
Let’s get our priorities sorted and help the greyhound industry protect itself from the influences gambling puts on a sport. (Heavens above, most sports have undergone or are undergoing these pressures.)
Prioritise our efforts on animal cruelty to aspects that are barbaric for both animal and humans.
