The team of Clayton Small, Isaiah Melia, Reid Brown and Will Fraser shot a combined final-day 221 to pip Sydney North by two shots.
There was nothing between them over the three days, with Sydney North leading after the first day and Hunter by three heading into yesterday.
They last won the title in 2012 but dominated through the early 2000s, winning six of the seven championships between 2000 and 2007.
Sydney West won the girls’ championships by over 200 shots from North Coast with the trio of Lucy Harris, Bella Kil and Tylah Saifoloi firing 723 for the 54 holes.
Kil (227) was also the stroke runner-up behind Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College Kensington’s Stephanie Kyriacou (226) while Butterfield topped the net (213).
The boys’ competition was extremely tight, with St Mary’s Cathedral Sydney’s Harrison Crowe, St John’s College’s Jones Comerford, TLSC Tumbi Umbi Campus’s Jordie Garner and Kinross Wolaroi Schools’ James Conran all carding 214.
Crowe finished up the winner on countback from Conran.
Comerford (214) did take home the gold in the net ahead of Marist College Eastwood’s Harry Doig (215).
Both were part of a Combined Catholic Colleges team that set the pace and won the Tony Stair Trophy, which is played for between them, CHS and Combined Independent Schools.
Hosts North West finished fifth in the boys on 711.
Farrer’s Tom Gill was their best performer, shooting 229 after a 79 yesterday.
Jock McPherson (Peel) topped the final-day scores with 78 for 234, while Toby Cooper (Armidale High) scored 248 and Jack Carey (Armidale High) 274.
Moree Secondary College’s Bree Purse was the zone’s lone female representative and, playing off a handicap of nine, hit 266.
Her efforts were rewarded with selection in the girls’ CHS Honour team.
The championships also doubled as a selection trial for the NSW All Schools teams to play at the Nationals in Adelaide from August 14-20.
