THE first go round of the Bayer and Shadow Trailers Open Futurity saw 130 of Australia’s best three-year-old cutters put through their paces on Wednesday as the 12- day competition continues to build.

The horses on display in the main event showed amazing talent in the finishing section of the first go round, with three competitors unable to be split by the five-member judging panel that includes two US- based judges.
Reeling in the points for equal first were some of the biggest names on the Australian circuit, with all-time money earner Todd Graham on Cats a Comin, Aaron Wheatley on Sting Rey and Trent Smith on Metallic Bling all collecting 219 points in the opening run.
Glen Innes trainer Phil Dawson, on board Sophisticated Bohemian, almost made it a four-way draw, missing out by just one point in an impressive display on the chestnut colt.
Last night saw some 70 four-year-olds hit the world class arena in the first go round of the SDP Buffalo Ranch Open Derby, while today’s events include the second go rounds of the Mavericks Western Wear Open Classic Challenge and the SDP Buffalo Ranch Open Derby.
For Oakey trainer and Australian cutting legend Graham, the first two days of the Futurity have produced near perfect results.
Before taking equal first in the Open Futurity, the Queensland trainer kicked off the Origin celebrations early by taking equal first place with himself on two different charges in the first go round of the Classic Challenge.
Graham scored 147 points on the back of his wife Jacqueline’s horse Flash Drive, before equalling that score on board the Bruce Booth- owned Blinham Ellie Again.
Cobram trainer Corey Holden was just off the mark, taking out third and fourth place on Reylee PLay with 146 points with Chisums Blue Spin half a point behind that.
Tonight the inaugural Rock The Futurity concert will kick off at 7.30pm at the AELEC, with the Sunny Cowgirls headlining alongside Hurricane Fall, with tickets available at www.entertainmentvenues.com.au.
This Sunday and Monday will see free entry to the NCHA Futurity, with good crowds expected over the two free days and weekend before the finals and rodeo next weekend.
