Every year, each house group performs four musical pieces for the competition, which in recent years has coincided with Calrossy’s Experience Day.
This year, the theme was “from the movies”, with the girls performing a selection of musical pieces from the big screen.
The competition involves every student from the girls’ campus performing in the large choral group section.
This year the girls rocked out a number of classics, including You’re The Voice, I Say A Little Prayer and Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll.
But it was the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell classic, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, that won the choral section for Karrawarra. Under the leadership of cultural captain Eliza Draper, Karrawarra also took out the house music competition by a mere one point over Ellaroo.
The house music competition began at Calrossy decades ago, shortly after the headmistress, Miss Parr, introduced the house system to the school.
Head of Secondary Girls, Judy Taylor, said the comp-
etition allows the girls to develop their leadership skills and showcases their musical abilities.
“It is about students working with students and gives our Year 12 girls further
opportunity to develop their leadership skills,” Mrs Taylor said.
“They are given minimal teacher input with regard to music choice and arrangements and encouraged to explore their own strengths in putting the four performances together.”
Meanwhile, on the sports field, Calrossy is also kicking goals.
Two secondary boys were selected at the weekend to play for NSW Country Rugby Union.
Sam Gray was selected in the 16s, with Nathan Watts to represent in the 15s.
Almost a dozen Calrossy boys were named in the Association of Independent Co-Educational Schools (AICES) rugby union sides, following selection trials last week.
Bill Buster, David Hines, Charles Meyers and Tyler Simshauser gained selection in the open rugby side.
Sam Gray, Ben Grant, AJ Pretorius, Sam Buster and Riley Catts were named in the AICES under-16s team, with Blake Murphy and Joseph Tufrey named as shadows.
The Calrossy boys are also enjoying success in representative hockey.
Last Wednesday, Jeremy Blakely, Gus Wolfgang, Jack Watson, Matthew Scott and Alex Taggart were part of the winning AICES team at the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) hockey championships in Moorebank.
The boys were undefeated, scoring 12 goals with only one against.
Jeremy Blakely and Matthew Scott were selected in the CIS open boys’ hockey team to compete at the tri-series on June 20 at Homebush.
After that, Jeremy Blakely is off to South Africa with the Australian under 16 all schools team.
