The David Willis-managed side started its 2016 CHS Carnival with a 6-2 win over Sydney North yesterday morning but lost 6-2 to the strong Western side in the afternoon.
This morning it plays North Coast before playing Sydney West in the afternoon.
“It’s going to be touch and go against North Coast,” Willis said.
“Both teams are pretty even.
“Western are very strong this year and the only team in our pool who won both opening games today.”
It makes this morning’s game crucial for the NW side if it is to make the semi-finals.
Yesterday, Tom Lane (Farrer), Luke Albertson (Tamworth High), Darby Chalmers (Duval) and Harry Lewin (Oxley) were NW’s best with Albertson scoring an “awesome goal”, Willis said.
At Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood, the North West Boys’ primary football side had a tough start to its State Carnival, manager Darrel Mole said.
The side conceded an own goal in its opening game against North Coast before Nemingha’s Luke Gentle equalised.
“North Coast scored a very good goal late, in the final five minutes to win 2-1,” Mole said.
“It was unfortunate but the boys came back well and played well with a good passing game.”
However they then met defending champions CIS and lost 6-nil, playing better in the second half when they kept the metro representative side to two goals.
They then lost their final game 5-nil to Polding.
Down 4-nil at halftime, the side played much better in the second half.
Goalkeeper Ryan Harris (Ben Venue) made some good saves despite a couple of big scores while Angus Towie (Armidale City) and Nick Jackson (Ben Venue) also impressed in defence.
Farrer student Daniel York went to Sydney with the side as its student referee and also impressed officials, officiating in five matches.
“He did very well,” Mole said.
“He did such a good job they have asked him to referee a Sydney FC Youth League game tonight.”
North West girls’ secondary football side also started its State Carnival at Cromer yesterday but lost both games to Hunter (5-nil) and Sydney South West (15-nil).
The Tristan Jones-managed side plays Sydney and North Coast this morning.
