The Roos booted 26.27 183 to the Suns’ 5.9 39 at No. 1 Oval Tamworth on Saturday with Matt Hodge kicking nine and Daniel Overeem (4), Brock Quinn (3), Dean Hoy (3) and Brandon McRedmond (2) kicked multiples as well.
In Inverell the Saints hosted Narrabri Eagles at Varley Oval and won by 200 points where Michael Gould also kicked nine goals.
Saints coach and president Dick Gleeson was hugely impressed with the performance from his side.
“I don’t think we could have played any better,” Gleeson said.
“They played all right too but we’ve played a lot worse sides than that and struggled. The boys did play very well.”
He said an influx of youth in recent weeks had been a godsend.
“We had 28 players at training Thursday night – had to leave 10 out,” he said.
All these young kid have come across from league and given us leg speed out wide.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen when the semis come around.”
Michael Gould was in outstanding form while captain and fullback Sam Kimmence was in charge all game.
“They only kicked two goals and they were in the last quarter,” he said of the Eagles.
Troy Dan, a young recruit from Wellington, also starred.
“He was only playing his fourth game and was outstanding,” Gleeson said. “He’s going to be a great asset when he learns the game.”
Michael Miskle and Darren Clark were the lone goalkickers for the Eagles who were best served by Kirk Warren, Bailey Clarke, Sebastian Egan, Daniel Hughes, Blake Sunderland and Andrew Weymer.
In Tamworth, Roos coach Tony Bishop set his side a 50-point target for every quarter.
“Full credit to the Suns, I thought they really turned up and competed all day,” he said.
“They stopped us from reaching those targets and even kicked a few themselves.”
Bishop was disappointed with some of the defensive effort.
“However, all up, I couldn’t ask for much more,” Bishop said.
“We did have a few fill-ins today and another first gamer.”
He thought his midfielders, Brock Quinn, Daniel Leon and Dean Hoy were his best while ruckman Carl Frazier also earned praise.
Moree’s Luke O’Neill kicked three goals and was among their best with Tom Lather, Zach Collier, Matt Lather, Bradley Pritchard and Dominic Brown.
