Heat seekers delight in warm weekend for New England North West

THE mercury is rising this weekend as temperatures across the region climb to the early 30s for the first time since April.

A top of 31 is expected in Tamworth and Gunnedah today and a few degrees hotter for Moree at 33.

The NSW Rural Fire service has suspended fire permits in Tenterfield, Inverell, Glen Innes, Guyra, Armidale, Walcha and Uralla until Monday due to a high fire danger period.

RFS Superintendent Chris Wallbridge asked all landowners and permit holders to take extreme care in the next few days.

“Already the RFS has responded to over 80 fires in the Northern Tablelands and New England areas, the majority of these being escaped permit fires,” Superintendent Wallbridge said.

Tamworth’s pools will get a workout this weekend with large crowds expected to enjoy a dip to beat the heat. Manilla, Barraba, Kootingal, Nundle and Tamworth’s city pool will reopen to the public on Monday.

A mild 12 degrees is expected tonight for Tamworth, coinciding with the beginning of daylight saving. Temperatures will cool slightly towards the start of the week with a chance of isolated showers in Tamworth on Monday and Tuesday.
