Daryl Brown was farewelled at a funeral service in Inverell yesterday – two-and-a-half weeks after he died in hospital from critical injuries.
The 60-year-old was struck by a white older-model sedan as he walked on Cameron St about 10.45pm on March 5.
Witnesses helped Mr Brown at the scene before he was rushed to hospital, but he died just hours later.
The vehicle did not stop at the scene and took off, and despite appeals by police for the driver to come forward, there have been no arrests in relation to the incident.
Detectives have been investigating the hit-and-run and now believe a man with a country-style hat was behind the wheel of the vehicle at the time.
Inverell Chief Inspector Rowan O’Brien said investigators were hoping someone might have seen the car nearby at the local Inverell Show, which was held on the night of the hit-and-run.
“Police are especially seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed a white older-model Toyota Camry sedan, believed to have left the Inverell Showground from the horse stable or Pioneer Village side exit, between 10.35pm and 10.45pm on Saturday, March 5,” he said.
“The vehicle is believed to have been driven by a male wearing an Akubra-style hat.”
New England Detective Inspector Ann Joy told The Leader police were hoping the photo and detailed description might jog the memory of someone in the area at the time.
“Through the course of the investigation, detectives have spoken to a number of people and established those circumstances,” she said.
“But we are appealing for more information from the public now that we have released further detail which might assist someone’s memory.”
