With the overwhelming success of last year’s inaugural event, organisers decided to run the fundraiser again. It’s the brainchild of Calrossy mum Debra Watts, who has two boys in secondary school at Calrossy.
Mrs Watts has put in countless hours getting the carnival off the ground and is excited this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better.
Mrs Watts, a retired police officer, and her husband Stuart say they’ve always believed in giving back to others and have long been involved with charity work.
“We both believe to get the most out of life, you must help others wherever you can,” Mrs Watts said.
“We believed this event would be a fantastic way to involve the whole community in supporting a good cause.”
That good cause is the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, a charity Calrossy has supported in the past.
“It was also chosen because it was a charity people related to as an important resource for survival and without support would struggle,” Mrs Watts said.
The inaugural Cracker Carnival raised more than $11,000 for the chopper service, with a crowd of 2500 people pouring through the gates of the William Cowper campus to enjoy the family atmosphere.
This year promises to be even better, with more rides, market stalls and the highlight of the night: the fireworks.
mong the new rides this Saturday will be dodgem cars, the V4 Ultimate Bungee, a giant slide and the Big Baller Wipeout. There will also be a range of market stalls and a sideshow alley, featuring everything from facepainting and a dunking machine to pass-thefooty and bigfoot races.
Local produce, craft, jewellery, educational toys and food will also be available to purchase. The carnival has become a whole-school event, with many parents working behind the scenes to make the stalls and sideshow alley happen.
Students have also played their role, contributing to the goodies for food and craft stalls. Of course, the highlight of the carnival will be the fireworks.
This year they will have a theme of unity, peace and goodwill, and will showcase the colours of Australia. But the best thing about Calrossy’s Cracker Carnival is the price – entry is by gold-coin donation.
The organisers say they wanted it to be affordable and offer entertainment for the whole family.
Calrossy’s Cracker Carnival is on this Saturday, March 19, from 3.30pm to 8.30pm, at the William Cowper campus on Moore Creek Rd. Don’t miss the fun, colour and bargains.
