The innovative exhibition will open at the TRECC on April 26 and run until May 1.
Currently in Melbourne, the travelling exhibition contains about 200 artefacts from the Australian War Memorial’s collection.
“It’s intended to tell the story of the Australians’ experience in the First World War and the century of service that our army, navy and air force have contributed,” Major-General Brian Dawson said.
Tamworth Regional Council mayor Col Murray said the event would attract people from right across the region.
“Tamworth Regional Council takes great pleasure in partnering with the exhibition. We’re very excited about it. The people of the region will demonstrate how much Anzac means to them,” Cr Murray said.
“The opportunity is much further enhanced by opening on the 26th of April, right after Anzac Day, so we’re expecting very large crowds.”
The exhibit takes visitors on a journey from the start of WWI, through an innovative audio guide and a series of galleries featuring real artefacts, puts viewers into the environment and portrays a sense of why war was declared and the ultimate consequences.
Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience executive director Alison Creagh said the Tamworth exhibit would feature some local stories from the war.
“The community zone is about local stories. We’ll be working with the city of Tamworth and surrounding regions to try to tell regional stories,” she said.
