Aaron Filmer forced his way into a home on Wandobah Rd on the night of July 23 last year, while armed, and assaulted a 30-year-old man who was in a bedroom.
Shortly after, the 29-year-old offender fled the home, and police and paramedics were alerted.
The victim had suffered a head injury and was treated at the scene by paramedics. He was taken to Gunnedah hospital before being transferred to Tamworth hospital for further treatment.
A crime scene was set up at the home and Oxley detectives called in to investigate.
Filmer was charged just a day after the incident with three offences, after handing himself in to police in Muswellbrook.
He has been on conditional bail since, and has been residing in Queensland.
Filmer appeared in Tamworth Local Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to one offence before a charge of common assault was withdrawn by the DPP.
Magistrate Roger Prowse committed Filmer to Tamworth District Court for sentencing, with a date to be fixed in April.
He was committed for sentence on one charge of aggravated entry of a dwelling with intent to inflict actual bodily harm.
A second charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm will follow on a 166 certificate to be dealt with on sentencing.
Mr Prowse also ordered authorities to prepare a background report on Filmer, who remains on conditional bail.
