The assumptions made by Jan Morris (Letters, Saturday, February 6) deserve serious consideration, but particularly the spurious claim that if we redefine marriage, it will be “just business as usual”.

Those supporting the redefinition of marriage tend to argue that nothing will change, while accusing opponents of declaring that the sky will fall.
I am sure that the truth lies in between.
In Washington in 2013, a Christian florist was taken to court for choosing to honour her faith instead of accept business from gay customers.
A bakery business in Northern Ireland refused to bake a cake with a message endorsing gay marriage, and has just been taken to court.
In our own Tasmania, the Catholic Archbishop of Hobart is facing legal action – not for vilification or ridicule, but for stating, in a Catholic publication, the standard Catholic position regarding marriage.
Business as usual?
No one questions the homosexuals’ right to live as they wish.
But will Christians, Muslims and others still possess the freedom to act according to conscience?
