Bryson Roser, Todd Carey and Barry Biffin are off to Abu Dhabi today for the United Arab Emirates Tent Pegging World Cup qualifier.
The event is the only chance the Aussie boys will have of making the cup, needing to place third or higher to qualify from 10 disciplines.
The three are two time reigning Royal Easter Show champions, while Roser and Biffin contested the last World Cup in Oman, it will be Carey’s debut in the green and gold after winning selection a month ago, and he couldn’t be prouder.
“I only started pegging in 2012 because I had some mates that did it,” Carey said.
“I have never been to the Middle East before either so it should be pretty interesting.”
Carey will partner Roser at the qualifier as Biffin takes up the role of manager for this trip.
“They will be out in the sun while I rub shoulders with the sultan,” Biffin said.
“It is always great over there (UAE).”
“They really look after us and put on great events.”
“It is front page news like the NRL is here.”
The pair of riders will go into a draw on Tuesday morning to see which horse they get for the tournament, an element that Roser admits can be tricky when you are trying to hit targets with a lance or sword at pace from its back.
“It can make it difficult sometimes but everyone is in the same boat,” Roser said.
“I think we should be good enough to qualify again.”
Competition begins on Tuesday and finishes on the weekend.
Albury’s Jake Van Dorsen will coach the team that also includes Albury rider Terry Phillips and Macksville’sNeville Rathbone.
While the Aussie boys are focused on qualifying for the World Cup they are also keeping an eye on wining a third straight Royal Easter crown to celebrate Biffin’s 30th year at the event.
