They have some stiff opposition at tonight’s ASC Sports Awards night at Armidale Bowling Club though and Hillgrove first grade skipper Brad King isn’t confident.
What he is confident about is his new-look side’s good start to the new season.
Hillgrove sit atop the first grade table with some talented young players already excelling.
“We had a great season last year – beat Easts in the grand final,” King said.
“The second grade side lost their grand final and the third graders got knocked out in the final.
“It’s continued on for us well this season,” he said.
“It’s been a good start for us so far with some new faces like Adam Thurlow, the South African, Michael Cursons and young TAS cricketer Will Andrews.”
The Colts have lost Harrison King (Port Macquarie), Bentley Cropper and Josh Croft from their first grade side which is on top of the Armidale first grade table.
After having last Saturday’s second day of a two-game washed out, King’s hoping to get back on the field this Saturday when his Colts tackle Ex-Services at Lambert Park and Armidale City plays Easts at Armidale Sportsground.
In the meantime the Colts will be hoping to add a team of the year trophy to the cabinet but he knows there are some handy sides in the running, including the ADDA Constructions T20 side that also contains Hillgrove teammates Matt Schaefer and Matt Baillie.
There is also the Barbarians third grade cricket side, the East Armidale first grade football team and the Royal Hotel’s fast five net- ball team, Armidale City men’s hockey team, the Royal Hotel Guyra men’s nines hockey, Dreamcoat women’s nines hockey, lawn bowlers Steve Fuller and Thomas Inman as well as the Armidale Blues first, second and third grade rugby teams and the Newie Cougars’ first grade netball.
The United women’s first grade hockey side rounds out the senior local teams’ nominees for a night where special guest is Australian Sevens star Tiana Penitani.
Senior and junior sports stars of the year will be named as well as awards for best teams local, regional and at state or higher in the senior and junior ranks.
Four Service to Sport awards will also be presented.
ARMIDALE FIRST GRADE TABLE: Hillgrove Colts 12 (nett run rate 2.2027), Easts 9 (1.1625), Armidale City 6 (.8077), Ex-Services 3 (.5224).
