The pair, both aged 22, were interviewed by Strike Force Telagaree detectives before being formally charged with the shooting murder, The Newcastle Herald reports.

The massive breakthrough comes eight months after Mr Parry bled to death after being shot once in the abdomen with a rifle during a violent home invasion at the Wickham home the 41-year-old had shared with his elderly father.

Police suspected the murder occurred during a botched drug rip-off, with the killers mistakenly thinking Mr Parry was a major player in the city's drug trade.

Instead, the likeable bloke with a hearing impairment grew a couple of cannabis plants in his backyard and often shared some of the crop with his friends.

Strike Force Telagaree was set up the morning of Mr Parry's alleged murder on March 7 after two men stormed the single-storey Dickson Street home of the Parrys and started yelling for Robbie to hand over cash.

Robbie was shot once, the .22 calibre bullet striking a vital artery near his liver and causing severe internal bleeding.

As he lay bleeding to death on the floor, his elderly father opened his bedroom door before the gunman allegedly threatened him.

Detectives interviewed a 22-year-old inmate of Silverwater Jail on Wednesday before a former Mayfield man was transported from Cessnock Jail to Newcastle police station on Thursday morning and charged.

Both men are expected to face Newcastle Local Court on Thursday.
