Kelly Robert Taylor admitting to several of the charges in a bail hearing in Tamworth Local Court yesterday, but the case has been referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, because of the serious nature of some of the offences.

The 58-year-old’s property at Curlewis was raided by police late last week and four firearms, including a prohibited gun, were seized by police.

Taylor was not at home at the time and was only arrested on Tuesday by Gunnedah detectives.

Yesterday, Taylor lodged a bail bid. Solicitor Fiona Hadlington said the court would obviously be concerned about Taylor failing to appear and endangering the safety of the community.

“The safety of the community has to be a concern, because of the nature of the charges,” she said.

Magistrate Michael Holmes said it was a strong case against Taylor.

“You have a lengthy criminal history. Your record doesn’t help you. A custodial sentence is likely (if convicted). The strength of the prosecution case is strong. There is a history of violence,” he said, but added strict conditions imposed by the court could mitigate the risks, including posting surety.

Taylor was bailed to live at the 400-acre property at Curlewis where he was arrested, and he will have to report to police twice a week in Gunnedah.

“He is not to leave the Gunnedah shire or Tamworth region,” Magistrate Holmes said, adding that Taylor was prohibited from entering any Australian departure point.

The case has been adjourned to later this month and police checks will now be carried out to determine where the firearms originated from.
