The 26th annual Peel Schools Rugby League carnival attracted 173 teams vying for 38 trophies.
The first photo in our gallery shows the trophies being admired by Northern Division coach and former Kangaroo winger Don Adams with Anne-Maree Gerathy, daughter of Noel Gerathy, secretary of the Peel Schools Carnival committee, who helped clean and polish the cups.
Included in the gallery are photos of game highlights from the Wee Waa v Christian Brothers College, Tamworth, 16B division which Wee Waa won 7 – 3; Tamworth A v Moree 16A game which Tamworth won, then went on to defeat Oxley High in the final; and the headline game between Gunnedah and Farrer.
More than 2000 spectators turned up to Tamworth’s No1 oval to watch Gunnedah defeat Farrer 9 - nil.
This is how The Northern Daily Leader reported on this game on the front page:
“The stronger Gunnedah side gave an entertaining display of penetrating runs and hard tackling.
“Their ability to continually break the Farrer defence and quickly back each other up were the deciding factors in the final scores.
“Both sides adapted ‘softening up’ tactics from the outset of the game.
“Highlight of the first half was a brilliant intercept by Gunnedah lock, Greg Collyer.
After a 40m run from inside Gunnedah’s half, he sidestepped several cover defence Farrer players and created an overlap which almost resulted in a try.
“Gunnedah led 3 - nil at half time the try coming from a strong run by winger Greg Jones.
“Farrer did well to contain Gunnedah in the first half, but they failed to match the determination of their opponents during the final spell.
“Gunnedah’s strong runs straight down the middle in the final stages of the game resulted in two more tries from halfback Daryl Griffin and Greg Collyer.”
2015 would have been the 67th year of the running of the Peel Schools Rugby League Carnival but the committee decided to cancel this year’s event due to liability and insurance issues.
