Erin Thomas, who was a passionate and prolific playwright, died suddenly at the age of 33 in May of 2012.
Her former university, RMIT in Melbourne, where she mastered her craft, has this year launched an award in her memory – The Erin Thomas Award for Most Enterprising Student.
The award is given to a student who demonstrates creativity and initiative in screenwriting, and her parents Bob and Julie Thomas were thrilled to travel for the presentation of the inaugural award. “We were just overwhelmed to think that they were doing this to honour her in this way,” Mrs Thomas said.
Mr Thomas said, more than three years on, they still remain in the dark as to the cause of her death.
“‘Undetermined’ is written on her death certificate – that’s all we’ve got,” he said.
The pair have also set up the Erin Thomas Playwright Fund in their daughter’s memory to help fund regional, emerging playwrights pursue their dreams and reach the potential of their talent.
