Shaen Fraser and Kath Sevil will take to the road in their Ford Falcon station wagon tomorrow, headed to the ACT, where they will depart on Saturday on the Shitbox Rally.
The aptly-named rally sees drivers head inland through Silverton and Birdsville via the Birdsville Track, up to Townsville, where they will auction off their car, Louie, and fly back home after a week.
They’ve raised nearly $10,000 so far, double their original aim, with all money going to the Cancer Council.
Their fundraising efforts have been assisted by individuals as well as businesses, with blinds and awnings owner Peter Betts being a platinum sponsor, donating more than $1000 to their cause.
The 200 rally cars will travel in teams of 10-12 vehicles, with a mechanic for each team.
Each car has to be worth less than $1000, but be mechanically sound.
However, being shitboxes, it is expected there will be some mechanical dilemmas along the way.
They’ve called themselves the Annabell and Shirley Team.
Ms Fraser is the programs co-ordinator for the Cancer Council North West and said she wanted to do something for the charity from the other side, as a volunteer, rather than a worker.
She is also looking forward to the travel.
“I’m very limited in my travel around Australia and I’ve definitely not seen Central Australia,” she said.
“We are keen to promote Quirindi and we hope to leave mementos in each town, including Wallabadah postcards.”
Ms Fraser was inspired by Shitbox Rally founder James Freeman, who lost both his parents to cancer, as both of her parents are cancer survivors.
A team from Narrabri is also undertaking the trek.
