While they were coming from behind to achieve a 12-point win, Ashford were scoring their second big win of the new season at Ashford Sportsground.
After a 94-6 first-round win over Guyra, the Roosters hammered Tingha Tigers 100-16 on Saturday with Cameron Toomey the star.
The former Tingha Tiger crossed for five tries against his old club while Tom Lewis also scored a treble.
Moree Boars also had a big win in Moree on Saturday, beating the Guyra Spuds 82-10 while Inverell Hawks hosted Armidale Rams at Varley Oval yesterday and won 42-12.
Inverell pivot Jayden Connors crossed for three of the eight Hawk tries, with Harold Duncan, James Ballinger, Dallas Baldwin and Braden Sunderland also scoring.
Corey Garrett, James Ballinger and Connors were outstanding for the Hawks, who led 42-4 before the Rams crossed for a couple of late tries.
Apakuki Mate and Steve Widders were best for the Rams.
At Burt Jovanovic Oval, the reigning premiers dominated the first 20 minutes and led 18-6 through three excellent winger’s tries to Ethan Pegus, who showed great pace on the right edge.
Earlier, Glen had levelled at 6-all through a converted, barging try to prop Jeff Moate.
Magpie centre Craig Browne was proving a handful with each touch of the ball and his efforts were rewarded with a barnstorming try which Ben Vidler converted from out wide.
Vidler then darted over from short range and converted to level the scores at 18 apiece after 35 minutes.
Then, right on half-time, Glen captain-coach Nick Ehsman scored an easy try and the visitors took a 22-18 lead into the break.
Early play in the second half was punctuated by repeated handling errors from both sides and the Boomies were penalised several times for transgressions in the play the ball area.
Glen wasted several opportunities from close range before Browne posted his second try with another determined run and Glen led 26-18 with less than fifteen minutes remaining.
But the Boomies stormed back with three long-range tries to grab the points.
Fullback Lloyd Munro raced forty minutes for a fine try then centre Brian Saunders scored twice to seal victory.
“We had our chances,” Ehsman said.
“But we just couldn’t finish them off.
“We were up and down a bit in the first half but finished it off strongly, then we made a few errors early in the second half.
“We also had a couple of injuries which didn’t help.
“Todd (Cameron) was great for us again and the young blokes (Perry Stapleton, Brayden Gallagher and Jayden Ehsman –all Under 18 players) were awesome.
“Brayden had a great game in his first senior match against the Boomies and it’s great to have some youth coming through.”
