The 21-year-old son was stopped on Edward St for an RBT on Saturday night.
He allegedly stepped out of his vehicle and struggled with a nearby pedestrian.
He then resisted police and was handcuffed, but kicked at and assaulted police.
Police will allege the father of the 21-year-old came to the site where the car was stopped and became involved in an altercation with police. The son was charged with driving with a mid-range PCA and both men were charged with assaulting police.
They were both granted bail and will appear in Tamworth Local Court on April 27.
