An evening branch of the Tamworth CWA was recently formed, with 27-year-old Amy Burgess elected its president.
For Miss Burgess, CWA is somewhat of a family tradition, with her grandmother very much involved.
“It’s a bit of a family history thing, really,” Miss Burgess said.
“My grandmother and some of my great-aunties, who were all CWA members, were always around so I suppose I grew up with it. Because of this, I just wanted to be involved in the organisation, as I’m regionally-based and my partner is a cattle producer.
“The idea of being part of the organisation really appealed to me, because of what they stand for in the community.”
Joining Miss Burgess on the executive are Kylie Burkinshaw, secretary; Brydie Everson, treasurer; and two vice-presidents, Kate Armstrong and Annabelle Walsh.
About a month ago, a meeting was called to gauge interest in forming an evening branch, and several women indicated their interest in pursuing the association’s ideals, outside of business hours.
“Many people would be aware of the aims of the organisation which are grounded in the improvement of conditions for country women and children, through lobbying for change, helping the local community, creating a network of support and meeting together in towns and cities,” Miss Burgess said.
“We have had plenty of support from the existing day branch, which is one of the oldest in NSW. Together, we aim to continue to provide valuable community support both locally and more broadly.
“In the past this has included supporting essential services for those of us living in rural and regional communities, such as the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and local hospitals.”
The Tamworth Evening CWA branch meets the second Tuesday of the month at 6.15pm at the Tamworth Hotel, Marius St, with the option of staying for dinner and a chat after the meeting.
Both branches warmly welcome new and prospective members. Anyone interested in finding out more information can contact Amy Burgess, phone number 0458 612 857 or go to cwaofnsw.org.au
