A host of past players including out-and-out stars like Petero Civoniceva, Cliff Lyons, Mark O’Meley and Andrew Walker put on a great show to have the crowd out of their seats cheering and jeering their former heroes and villains as the game came to a nail-biting 32 all draw.
Several locals also got to pull on a jersey and have a run including young gun Mitchell Clifford-Jackson, Wests captain-coach Phil Beaton, Farrer boys Hayden Loughrey and James Fisk, as well as Phil Murphy and Nicky Turner.
Queensland player and organiser Craig Teevan said he had definitely seen enough on Saturday night to warrant the company having another look at Tamworth for a similar event this time next year.
“It has been a great night and great lead-up week as well,” Teevan said.
“We have been getting plenty of attention and there has been a good crowd through the gate.”
The organisation plays several games throughout the year all around NSW and Queensland, although it doesn’t like to concentrate on one area too much.
“We usually go somewhere for a few years if it is good and then leave it for a while and go somewhere else,” Teevan said.
“It is a good way to spread the game around and people don’t get sick of it.”
While the day was also for charity – the Westpac Rescue Chopper and Hunter New England Health this time – it is also to keep former players in touch and let them have a bit of fun and a run together.
“You miss the team environment and all that when you finish playing,” Teevan said.
“This is a way to get that feeling again and we always have a good weekend wherever we are.”
Teevan is hoping to make that decision over the next few weeks.
