The two sides had lost their opening games of the NSW Schoolboys’ Cricket Championship in Tamworth to Combined Catholic Colleges and Greater Public Schools on Monday and revived their carnivals along side each other on Riverside.
At Dick Edwards Oval (Riv 1) NSW CHS made 152 and then dismissed Combined Associated Schools (CAS) for 72 while CCSC had it a tad harder, making 9-186 and then dismissing CCC for 148.
Six of the top eight CCSC batsmen made double figures – skipper Charles Litchfield (21), Jonathan Fowles (16), Conner Wilkinson (38), Tom Galvin (16), Daniel Donato (23) and Harry Ridgewell (18) while Arjun Nair (3-20), Mitchell Hardie (2-53) and Joseph hart (2-40) were the main wicket takers for CCC.
Josh Doyle top scored for CCC with a patient 55 but the CCSC bowlers were too hungry with Peter Francis (4-20 off 10) and Thomas Mullen (3-40 off 10) leading the way.
“It was a good way to bounce back,” said coach Andrew Waters.
“Peter (Francis) was a bit of a standout in both games. He took four wickets and scored 32 as well in the first game and then four more today.
“But I was really happy with that. To go into the third day with a win , we’re right back in it.”
He said “runs on the board” was a big head start.
“Especially in schoolboy games, always hard to chase.”
While he was delighted with the bowling he thought “everyone chipped in” with the bat.
“It was a really good all-round performance.”
His side now plays CHS 1s in a big day night match at No. 1 Oval today.
“CHS 1s were quite convincing winners today too.
“It’s a big game for us but the boys are also looking forward to playing under lights, should be fantastic.”
They will meet a CHS 1s who made just 152 but then routed CAS for 76 to register their first win.
Brandon Crosbie (42) top scored for CHS 1s and with Todd Marshall 918) added some late valuable runs after Tim Studdert (11) and Max Bryant (30) had also made double figures earlier.
Skipper Liam Windel (3-26) was the pick of the CAS bowlers while George Furrer (2-19) and Anuj Aloysius (2-25) also grabbed wickets.
However the CHS bowlers were on song with only Todd Levine (10) reaching double figures for CAS.
Jacob McNaught (3-27), Brendan Smith (4-20), Dylan Bent (2-13) and Kyle Chisholm (1-13) combined to register a 76 run win.
“We lost to CCC by 13 or 14 yesterday,” said CHS 1s coach Terry Willis.
“So it was good to bounce back like that. Disappointing to lose wickets like that but we did have fair bit of quality with the ball.”
While CHS and CCSC play the day night fixture CHS 2s and CC match up at Dick Edwards Oval and GPS tackle CAS at Max Sutton Oval (Riv 3).
