The Tamworth Thunderbolt men’s chief is also the coach and manager of the North West girls’ side to play in this year’s CHS Girls’ Carnival at Penrith in early May.
He has been the girls’ coach for a few years.
“It’s been a long process,” Ireland said of the rebuilding phase.
“Mentally we haven’t been strong but we are turning that around.
“We had our best finish for years last year when we made the semi-finals and finished fourth.
“That was positive and makes us hopeful that we are going to be more than competitive again this year.”
State Under 20 representative Taylor Skelton has been a fixture in the NW side for the past few years and her presence again will be a major bonus for the team.
While the girls are headed to Penrith, the boys’ side, coached by Louise Taylor, is off to Minto for its State CHS Carnival the week before the girls’ side goes.
