The radio station is the third oldest in their network, behind 2SM and 2HD and they celebrated with an outside broadcast from Shoppingworld yesterday .
Station general manager Lisa Ashcroft said the station had worked through the changes from having their first outside broadcast caravan to now using social media.
Some things haven’t changed.
“Our day-to-day running of the station hasn’t altered a lot, though, except for live broadcasts, which is pretty amazing with the technology we have today,” Ms Ashcroft said.
“We can instantly put someone to air via a phone now and with the technology and production with the various programs we run, it’s endless as to how creative we can be and it’s all there at the touch of the button.”
Over its 80 years, the radio station has been instrumental in starting the Tamworth Country Music Festival, the Australasian Country Music Roll of Renown and Country Music Hands of Fame.
The station has kept scrapbooks documenting the history, with photos a special feature of their celebrations yesterday.
“When all of this is over, we’re going to be doing a time capsule,” Ms Ashcroft said.
“We’ve gone digging and found the old logos and old stickers.”
Although its their birthday, they are giving away the presents with a 2015 Cruisin’ Country cruise to giveaway to a lucky listener, John Laws watches and 80 current CDs for a listener.
