LATITAT might have earned the chance to emulate the great Akwazoff and win three major Cups on the trot after the Stafford Wain-trained gelding fought back to win yesterday’s $35,000 Akubra Quirindi Cup (1600m).

Akwazoff won the 1996 Walcha, Quirindi and Armidale Cups in a brilliant run of HNWRA Cup successes.
Yesterday Latitat added the Quirindi Cup to the 1440m Walcha Cup he won for his Armidale trainer and Scone jockey Leanne Henry two weeks ago and became the last horse to complete that double since the Merv Corliss-trained Akwazoff graced the local region.
“I know what you are going to ask next,” Wain said during a trackside interview with The Leader.
“Where to next? Maybe the Guyra Cup.
“It’s dropping back to the 1400m (March 1) but that might be it.”
However the 1900m of the March 16 Armidale Cup might still be in the frame, especially as Latitat ran in the Cup last year and, while unplaced, was only beaten just over two lengths with an apprentice jockey on board.
Now he has senior jockey in Henry as a regular rider, in good form and in sync with the gelding too.
It was Henry’s daring decision, Wain said, that won the Cup.
She was caught wide early on and with Latitat pulling hard.
“I had no choice,” Henry said.
“He was pulling hard, wouldn’t settle so I let him roll.”
He rolled straight to the front about 800m from home, putting two or three lengths on the field.
Race favourite Collar (4-1) gave chase and the two waged a straight-long battle, with the Jeremy Sylvester- trained and Robert Thompson-ridden Collar looking like he might dash past the Armidale gelding.
“He never headed me,” Henry said.
“He’s tough, never gave up and kept fighting.”
In the end he won by a long head with a long neck to Rod’s Bid who came with a late run from back in the field to just edge out Stable Surprize for third.
“I told you we liked him over the mile,” Wain reminded this journalist of a post-Walcha Cup interview.
He paid $89.60 on the NSW TAB for his Walcha win and yesterday he rewarded his backers with an $18.10 winning result.
Yesterday’s win was six-year-old Latitat’s ninth win in 30 starts and swelled his prizemoney to $102,575.
