The Tamworth Athletics complex will be the scene of the two-day carnival, as the cream of northern NSW’s talent competes for a starting spot at the State Carnival in March at the Homebush Athletics Centre.
The Tamworth club will field 54 athletes who qualified at zone in Inverell late last year.
That number is a record, according to vice president and trainer Peter Henderson.
“There are plenty of good athletes in there as well,” Henderson said.
“A lot of work has gone into this weekend – it should be really good.”
The top two athletes in every event will automatically qualify for the state champs, with the state’s next best eight also getting a spot.
The club boasts a few recent state and national champions with Emma Klasen, John Moore, Kate Pianta and Nick Price picking up golds at different championships late last year.
“The senior girls’ relay team is a good shot of going all the way this year,” Henderson said.
They will close out the carnival on Sunday afternoon.
