Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music manager Noelene McGrane said the Hawaiian-inspired instrument was the “it” musical item of late, which has proven true in a touching tribute within her own family.
Her mother, Margaret Bosworth, has decided to pick up the ukulele in memory of her husband, Peter, who suddenly passed away nine months ago.
The ukulele was a gift from Mrs McGrane to her father, who tragically never had the chance to play it.
Mr and Mrs Bosworth shared a life-long passion for music and both played the piano for many years.
“For 49 years I’ve been one of a pair, and now it’s just me,” Mrs Bosworth said.
This year she is eager to begin ukulele lessons with other locals who have taken a shine to the quirky string instrument.
At 73, she is proof you’re never too old to learn a new song, but it’s important to remember the old ones, too.
