While Smith was carving out 103 Tamworth also made a good start to its carnival with a seven wicket win over Lismore in their opening game at Harris Park.
Daniel Smith’s fine century highlighted the opening WTS day.
Opening the batting he helped his side make 3-244 and then restrict WPHC to 6-129.
“We had a pretty good day,” said Penrith coach Nigel Bull.
“The boys batted well, Daniel scored 103, Ryan Garner 50 and Daniel Saywell 39. They worked the ball around well and hit the bad ball. Daniel batted very well, opened and batted with a balanced approach. He hit some very good shots and was aggressive at the right time.”
Hosts Armidale had a tough day, said manager Tony Jones.
After making 126 Northern Districts responded with 6-127 and a four wicket win in their WTS debut.
“It was a game that ebbed and flowed,” ones told The Leader.
“Northern Districts got a good start and then we got back into it but then changed again after the runout.”
That was Liam Neeson being run out for 42.
The Armidale Junior Cricketer of the year was in good touch and leading a fightback until his unfortunate dismissal.
Wally Davidson also scored 26 against a side best served by Elliot Carwadine’s 2-14, said manager Paul Kilby. “Elliot took two good catches as well, but everyone shared the wickets around,” he said.
“Jayden Brown batted well and retired on 46. Brayden Dilley (33) also batted well.”
Tom Lashlie (2-22) was best of the Armidale bowlers.
“It was a good start for us,” said Paul Kilby as the team prepares to tackle Tamworth at Rologas Field today.
Tamworth enters that match on a high after staring its WTS with a seven wicket win over Lismore.
Tamworth restricted Lismore to 8-90 with Jye Paterson (3-11), Toby Whale (2-10) and Aaron Madirazza (1-9) enjoying good spells against a side coming off a split round morning game against Hunter Valley.
Lismore had made 6-200 with Joe Olive (52), Oscar Stahl (51) and Nathan Campbell (39) leading the way, said coach Nigel Bull.
“It was a good start for us,” Nigel Bull said.
“Something a bit different, a split round but that was a good start for us.”
They finish that 50 over-a-side game today after Lachlan Buckley (2 wickets) and Max Andren bowled tightly for the HV side.
Yesterday afternoon the Lismore side changed their batting order around to give those who didn’t bat in the morning a hit.
Joe Olive (23no) and Lachlan Barnsley (20no) top scored in the 25 over-aside loss in the afternoon.
Tamworth responded with 3-95 with Jye Paterson (29), Tyson Rennie (23no) and Toby Whale (22) the top scorers.
“A good win to start with,” said Tamworth coach Chris paterson.
“The boys bowled well, fielded well and hit the bad ball.”
